At the end of 2018, Os Pararamas de Sucesso decided to get into the Christmas spirit in a very special way, recording four classics in versions filled with the influence of Jamaican rhythms such as ska. The project, featuring Herbert Viana, Bi Ribeiro and Joan Barone, celebrated the fraternal spirit of the time.
For this effort, the trio recruited longtime partner musicians including João Ferra (keyboards), Vidou Cordeiro (trombone), and Monteiro Jr. (tenor saxophone).
One of the standout recordings is Jose Feliciano’s original song “Feliz Navidad,” which takes on a ska look and an unmistakable Pararamas sound. Other Christmas songs that were rerecorded included “Jingle Bells,” “Silent Night,” and “We Wish You a Merry Christmas.”

Drummer Joan Barone described the work as a “Pararamas inside joke” and said it was done in high spirits in a “very positive atmosphere in the studio”. The idea for the project was inspired by notable foreign artists who have already recorded Christmas songs, including Nat King Cole, the Skatalites, the Beatles, Frank Sinatra, Elvis Costello, Van Morrison and Eric Clapton, many of whom are on Pararamas’ list of favorites.
More than just a musical tribute, “Natal dos Paralamas” also had a sense of community. The band’s statement encouraged people to donate to charities such as Natal Sem Fome, Viva Kazuza and Children’s Cancer Hospital, reinforcing the true spirit of the party.
Os Paralamas do Sucesso celebrates the party atmosphere with a Brasilia audience at Festival Estilo Brasil on November 21, and this 2018 effort remains an example of the band’s creativity and social engagement.
The Estilo Brasil Festival is organized by Banco do Brasil Estilo and sponsored by BB Visa, Banco do Brasil and Federal Card. The realization of this is big cityOh! art.
