COP Central: Halftime show, first half in Belém

Judge Andre Correa de Lago will point to the heart of the battlefield in Belém this Saturday (15th), marking the end of the first week of COP30. The match remains a draw. African stakeholders do not want to approve a list of 100 indicators to be used as criteria for financing climate change adaptation policies. They argue that to achieve this, rich countries must first commit to spending money. There is a risk that a decision will be postponed until COP32, which will be held in Africa. Ha ha ha ha negotiation. The best move in the game so far was President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva’s call on the COP to adopt a roadmap to overcome dependence on fossil fuels. The proposal developed by the Colombian delegation was circulated among countries this week. In parallel, Minister Marina Silva has won strong support for Brazil’s initiative (Germany, France, Kenya, the UK, Denmark) and as of Friday afternoon received support from 21 countries. COP30: Germany pledges ‘substantial sums’ to TFFF, but won’t announce immediate contribution Live: Lula defends use of oil profits and debt relief to accelerate energy transition Line-up: Ending the deal Prime Minister Correa do Lago has already decided on the line-up of the environment minister’s team, which will receive the ball to unlock the most complex negotiations from Monday. Germany and Gambia will be key leaders when it comes to climate change adaptation policies. Kenya and the UK will take over funding. Mexico and Poland will get a fair transition. Star Carlos Noble Montage by Rodrigo Bento/Clima Clark Observatory: Noble’s Message Nine of the world’s most important climate scientists, including Brazilian Carlos Nobre (pictured), released a manifesto on Friday, explaining that humanity needs to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 5% per year and that this can only be done by “rapidly eliminating the use of fossil fuels.” They add, “It’s physics,” as if to say it’s obvious. Fossil Fuel Lobby Defeated COP Scoreboard Montage by Rodrigo Bento/Climate Observatory As is customary at COP, Belém was occupied by politicians, environmentalists and, of course, fossil fuel lobbyists. Specifically, 1,602, making it the COP with the highest proportionate number of lobbyists since mapping began in 2021 by the Coalition to Eliminate Large Scale Polluters (KBPO). More than 1,061 fossil delegates attended COP30, including representatives from the 10 countries most vulnerable to the climate crisis: Chad, Eritrea, Guinea-Bissau, Solomon Islands, Micronesia, Niger, Sierra Leone, Somalia, Sudan and Tonga. The element of surprise – Indigenous people tell us how heat affected acai Did you know about the butterfly effect? The thesis that actions in one place unexpectedly change actions in another, even if they are unrelated? This is what three indigenous peoples from the Central Rio Negro region exemplified last Thursday in the Blue Zone when they spoke about how climate change is affecting the behavior of acai fruiting (previously in May, now in October) and peccaries (invading fields due to lack of edible fruit). The mapping of climate change in the daily lives of indigenous peoples is coordinated by the Instituto Socioambiental. Voices from the Stand – The Tribunal and the People’s Summit The People’s Tribunal concluded this Friday at the headquarters of the Federal Ministry of Public Affairs in Belém, symbolically adjudicating 21 crimes against the environment, including the expulsion of indigenous peoples to build the Belo Monte hydroelectric power plant and the mining dredging of the Tapajos River (the final report was submitted to the MPF). This Saturday, the People’s Summit will host the Global March for Climate Justice. This was a parallel event to the COP, which brought together people’s leaders from 62 countries in the capital, Pará. The rally is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. at San Blas Market. The organization hopes to attract 30,000 people.
