US President Donald Trump announced this Friday that he may file a $1 million lawsuit against the BBC next week over a misleading version of his 2021 presidential address.
“We’re going to ask for an amount between $1 billion and $5 billion (€860 million to €4.6 billion),” Trump declared on the presidential plane from Washington before departing for Florida. Republicans have announced that a judicial lawsuit could be filed as early as next week.
The BBC admitted this week that its Panorama program used a “misleading” version of a speech made on the day of the storming of the Houses of Parliament, combining snippets from different moments that could have changed its meaning.
Mr. Trump’s lawyers stand by the fact that this version omitted language in which Mr. Trump called on his supporters to march “peacefully and patriotically,” saying it damaged Mr. Trump’s reputation in connection with the violence at the time. A British court dismissed the case as an “error of judgment”, despite saying there was no legal basis for defamation claims related to the June 6 situation.
