The explosion hit an area of the city about 10 kilometers from the country’s main airport on the outskirts of Buenos Aires, causing flight delays and diversions. More than 20 people were injured. This Friday, in the city of Carlos Spegazzini in the province of Buenos Aires, 12 kilometers from Argentina’s main airport, Ezeiza International Airport, a strong explosion shook an industrial park, affecting visibility in the area and injuring 22 people, the Locán news agency reported early this Saturday (11/15).
Several flights scheduled to land at the airport were delayed or diverted, and one of the access roads to the terminal was blocked.
Thick black and orange smoke rose hundreds of meters into the sky above the city of Ezeiza, about 40 kilometers from Buenos Aires, as flames illuminated areas near damaged buildings.
Ezeiza Mayor Gaston Granados told the Tennessee Television Network early Saturday morning that it was still unclear where and how the explosion occurred, but said the blaze affected several factories in the industrial park.
Chemical industry, plastics, tires
“One of them is a chemical plant, where there is a fire in the sediment, and there are problems there related to agriculture and fertilizers. There is also another one related to plastics,” he said.
“These are different companies with different products. There’s a large inventory of tires, there’s a chemical company, there’s a warehouse (documents) in Iron Mountain. It’s a very complex fire,” Fabian García, head of civil defense for the state of Buenos Aires, told La Nación newspaper.
Most of the injured were residents who suffered mild to moderate injuries, including burns, multiple traumas, and shattered glass from the shock wave, according to local residents and medical personnel cited by local media.
