Wenbanyama had 26 points, 12 rebounds, four assists and three blocks in 38 minutes on the court, but it wasn’t enough to prevent San Antonio from coming back against a rousing Curry, who made 16 of 26 shots and made two free throws late in the game. The 37-year-old point guard tied Michael Jordan for the most players over 30 to score 40 points or more in a regular season game with 44.
In a tense fourth quarter as the Warriors recovered, referees had to separate Draymond Green and Wembaneyama three times during throw-in disputes. Wenbanyama attempted a dunk on Green at the fly-in, but the referee disallowed the shot because Green fouled the Spurs center.
Jimmy Butler scored 21 points for Golden State, and Brandin Podzemski and Will Richard each scored 10 points. For the Spurs, De’Aaron Fox had a double-double with 24 points and 10 assists, and Julien Champagnie added 14 points.
Harden records his 82nd triple-double; Clippers win in second overtime
In Dallas, James Harden had a decisive overtime performance to lead the Los Angeles Clippers to a 133-127 victory over the Dallas Mavericks in the NBA Cup on Friday night. The star had 41 points and 14 rebounds in addition to 11 assists for his 82nd career triple-double, helping the Clippers end their six-game losing streak with help from Ivica Zubac (27 points, 11 rebounds).
Not counting injured centers Anthony Davis and P.J. Washington Jr., the Dallas Mavericks suffered their seventh loss of their last eight NBA games. Naji Marshall and D’Angelo Russell each scored 28 points to try to prevent another comeback, but Harden made the difference in overtime.
The Houston Rockets defeated the Portland Trail Blazers 140-116, also in Texas, for their third straight win. Kevin Durant scored 30 points and Alperen Sengun was the highlight of the game with 25 points against Brazilian Thiago Splitter’s side.
In New Orleans, double-doubles from Luka Doncic (24 points, 12 assists) and Deandre Ayton (20 points, 16 rebounds), along with Austin Reeves’ 31 points, helped lead the Los Angeles Lakers to a 118-104 victory over the New Orleans Pelicans. Trey Murphy III scored 35 points for the Pelicans, who lost four straight and had the worst record in the Western Conference with 2 wins and 10 losses.
Both teams played the game without their main players. The Lakers’ LeBron James is still recovering from a preseason injury, and the Pelicans’ Zion Williamson remains out with a left thigh injury.
