Dr. Elio de Oliveira Santos, a former mayor of Campinas, will join the PSDB and is expected to seek the post of federal representative in 2026.
He was in charge of the inland city of São Paulo from 2005 to 2011, but was impeached for his role in a bid fraud scheme. Dr. Elio served as a federal member of the PDT from 1999 to 2003 and spent most of his career serving the party. He was also in MDB.
Dr. Elio is part of a new wave of PSDB members who have shrunk in recent years and are trying to rebuild themselves. Former minister Ciro Gómez was the party’s most high-profile name recently.
Former Santo Andre mayor and PSDB state executive chairman Paulo Serra said the party plans to elect up to four federal and six state representatives next year.
“In addition to the presence of key personnel for PSDB’s performance in São Paulo, the partnership of Doutor Helio and other names brings added value to our project. In the coming months, we will continue to coordinate with leaders in the state and plan for 2026. The idea is to field strong candidates for the House of Representatives, the Senate, the Legislative Assembly and the São Paulo executive branch,” Serra said.
