Romulo Caldeira, who defended Raposa, explained that he brought the famous Italian center forward and Krzysztof Piatek to Brazilian football.
Former Cruzeiro, Juventus, Fiorentina and Italy player Romulo Caldeira has taken on the role of agent and financial educator. However, he did not give up football completely last season as he tried to help Raposa. In an interview with newspaper Au Tempo, he revealed that he had contacted members of the Minas Gerais club’s board and made offers for both centre-forward Mario Balotelli and positional partner Krzysztof Piatek. Despite this, it was rejected with reasons justifying the presence of Caio Jorge in the cast.
”They had two names. One was great, Balotelli, but I don’t think he was a great fit because he stagnated a little bit despite doing very well at Turkiye. But Balotelli was the first to score. What I really wanted to bring, and I actually discussed it with the coach of Cruzeiro, was Piatek,” Romulo elaborated.
Cruzeiro bets on improving concentration
According to a former player, Cruzeiro’s management prioritized Caio Jorge’s adaptation and did not start negotiations with any foreign players. Especially since at the time, the number 19 was trying to reach peak physical and technical shape. The attackers then departed for the Heavenly team.
“Caio Jorge didn’t get off to a very good start in the beginning. I also talked to the then Cruzeiro manager, because he could have brought in a strong player, but he’s a really top player and a great friend of mine. I talked to the manager at the time and I really liked his reaction,” Romulo explained.
“It was like: ‘Romulo, if you bring in a striker now, Caio Jorge has just come, it will be the same as if we hadn’t given him a vote of confidence. Let’s take a break’. This opportunity came and I wanted to bring him in. He had expressed his desire to return to Brazil. Of course, the first club I spoke to was Cruzeiro,” added the former player.
Balotelli and Piatek
The striker is famous in the world of football for his career with big clubs such as Inter Milan, Manchester City and Liverpool, as well as his call-up to the Azzurri. “Super Mario” also caused controversy. Piatek also played for the Polish national team, with Milan being his main club.
When Romulo offered him to join Cruzeiro last year, he was at Turkiye’s Başaksehir and was the team’s top scorer. This season, he is playing for Al Duhaiim in Qatar.
