This Sunday, sports journalism lost a great representative. Luis Augusto Nunez, a journalist who worked for news organizations such as GLOBO, Revista Manchete, O Dia, Jornal do Brasil, and Jornal dos Sports, has died at the age of 76. He was battling kidney complications.

Nunez was 76 years old and leaves behind his wife, Ceeda, and daughter, Ana Julia. In addition to my work in the newsroom, I covered at least two World Cups and was part of CBF’s communications team for 14 years from 2002 to 2016. At the federation, I worked as a content and website editor.

Born in the city of Piray in the southern state of Rio de Janeiro, Nunez was a Flamengo fan. For friends like former GLOBO editor Tadeu Aguiar, his humor, love of reading, and appreciation for the quality of writing were inherited from his early days in communications as a proofreader in the 1970s.

— Luis Augusto was a great journalist. He had very good training and had been working on proofreading for a long time, so he was very careful with the text. He was a good writer, a good scorer and a Flamengo fan. He was a very friendly person and playful in a good way. He loved reading and left behind many friends, Tadeu said.

CBF also paid tribute to the journalist in a memorial.

“The native of Piray, Rio de Janeiro, was a professional who was much loved by his colleagues. He valued humor, with a wealth of funny stories, accuracy of information and respect for the work he did. At this moment of pain, the CBF sympathizes with the family and friends of Luis Augusto Nunez,” the federation wrote.

Luis Augusto Nunez will be buried at Pillai Municipal Cemetery this Monday at 4pm.
