Using the old friendly customer trick, a man robbed a clothing store on Calle Montevideo last Saturday morning.
The owner, a 53-year-old merchant with good manners and pleasant conversation, never imagined that the man who entered the store to try on clothes was actually preparing for a robbery. He expressed interest, asked about price and size, bought two T-shirts, and left with a promise to buy again the next day. There was nothing in his manner that led me to suspect that behind his politeness there was a hidden intention to deceive.
On Saturday, true to his word, the same man returned, but dressed differently and carrying a black leather briefcase in his hand. He said he wanted to change the clothes he chose for others of different sizes for himself and his son. Her apparent indecision forced the shopkeeper to repeatedly look at the shelves for options.
In between this back and forth, the man took advantage of the brief moment of distraction and took out a few pieces of clothing without anyone noticing. When he said his goodbyes, he didn’t buy anything this time, and the whole thing seemed to go off without a hitch.
But after a few minutes, I noticed that my order was missing several items, including a jacket, shorts, pants, and a T-shirt. The incident was classified as theft.
