Ambassador Andre Correa de Lago, President of COP30, said on Monday (10th) that he hopes the United Nations Climate Change Conference will make progress in combating climate change and proposing solutions to integrate climate and economics. “And above all, a COP that listens to science and believes in science,” he said in his opening speech to the conference.

Officially launching work on COP30, which runs until the 21st of this month in Belem, the ambassador said: “I have said it many times and I must say it again: this is a COP that must offer solutions. And I believe that the action agenda we have put together for this COP is absolutely essential for progress.” Brazil assumed the chairmanship of the organization until it moved to another headquarters next December.
The Ambassador stressed that “multilateralism is definitely the path to follow” to combat climate change. “Despite recent setbacks, the living conditions of people around the world can and must continue to improve, and science, education and culture are the paths we must follow,” he defended.
“There’s no question that multilateralism is the way forward in combating climate change. I’m skeptical of pandering to multilateral diplomacy, but I’m willing to do it,” he added.
He also criticized the fact that war is once again on the horizon for so many people around the world. “We have to be humble and realistic about the fact that we are missing a lot. We are almost there, but there is much work to do,” the ambassador said.
