Pope Leo XIV will hold an audience with film luminaries next Saturday, including Cate Blanchett, Monica Bellucci, Spike Lee and Spaniard Albert Serra, to explore “the possibilities that artistic creativity can bring to the Church,” the Vatican reported on Monday.
The conference, to be held in the Vatican’s Apostolic Palace, calls for: Strengthening ties between the Catholic Church and the film industry Within the framework of the Jubilee.
The Ministry of Culture and Education said in a statement that the pope wanted to “deepen dialogue with the film community” and reflect on the role of the arts in promoting human values.
Vatican Confirmed attendance of famous filmmakers Gianni Amelio, Francesca Archibuzzi, Marco Bellocchio, George Miller, Gaspar Noé, Giuseppe Tornatore, Gus Van Sant and Emil Kusturica are among the performers, as well as internationally renowned performers such as Cate Blanchett, Sergio Castellitto, Maria Grazia Cucinotta and Stefania Sandrelli.
Dialogue between faith and artistic creativity
This event is promoted by the Department of Culture and Education in cooperation with the Department of Communication and the Vatican Museums and provides continuity to other conferences dedicated to the arts, such as those held in Plastic Arts (June 2023) and Humor (June 2024).
The Vatican added that before this audience, Pope Leo XIV emphasized: The church’s approach to contemporary cultural expression and reaffirms our interest in the dialogue between faith and artistic creativity.
The event was in the spirit of the Jubilee of Artists and Culture, which was celebrated in February, and Pope Francis was scheduled to visit the Cinecittà studio and meet with more than 700 artists, but was unable to do so after being hospitalized with bronchitis.
