Israeli police said on Monday that a police officer shot dead a “terrorist” who allegedly opened fire near a West Bank settlement, amid heightened tensions in the region following an attack by the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) and other Palestinian groups on October 7, 2023.
“During the operation, detectives from the Hebron Police Department stopped a suspicious vehicle. At that time, an armed terrorist got out and opened fire on the officers. The officers fired back and neutralized the terrorist,” the statement said.
Israeli security forces said there were no casualties among their soldiers. The incident occurred near the settler settlement of Beit Hagai in the southern West Bank. The Palestinian Authority has not commented on the matter at this time.
Israeli military operations and attacks by Israeli settlers in the West Bank and East Jerusalem have led to an increase in these types of actions since October 7, 2023, killing more than 1,000 Palestinians, although record death tolls had already been recorded in these areas during the first nine months of the year.
More than 200 deaths related to the occupation and conflict have been reported so far this year, while nearly 500 Palestinian deaths have been recorded in 2024, according to UN data.
