Senate’s democratic capitulation to reopen government triggers intraparty civil war | International

The defection of seven Democratic and independent senators at noon (local time) on Sunday opened the door to the end of the longest partial government in U.S. history. The government completed its first day of operation on the 40th day of its seventh week this month. It also returned the party to a familiar position: an existential crisis that seemed to emerge after years of preoccupation with it after its big Nov. 4 victories in New York, New Jersey and Virginia.

Voter support appeared in polls to reward Democratic opposition to U.S. President Donald Trump and, in particular, his refusal to reach an agreement with his rivals to restart administrative reforms without a Republican promise that some health benefits included in the Obamacare program would not be repealed at the end of the year. With subsidies approved during the pandemic, the predictable outcome will be higher prices for health insurance for millions of Americans.

So why succumb to this non-conquest agreement now? The same question asks whether 40 senators will vote against the new Republican funding proposal on Sunday. It is still in the confirmation process (it must receive a final visa in good standing, be approved by the House of Representatives, and receive the President’s signature), but after 14 no votes, one thing can be taken for granted: Conservatives finally have the 60-vote qualified majority in the Senate that requires filibuster rules (he has 53 Escaños and one dissident, Kentucky veteran Rand Paul).

Hakeem Jeffries, leader of the Democratic Minority of the House of Representatives, addressed reporters at the Capitol at noon today and decided to make a statement on social networks. Their supporters will also vote in favor of the new proposal. Because this proposal has contributed to the “worsening of the health crisis” throughout the country in the past.

Three of the deserters, John Fetterman (Pennsylvania), Catherine Cortez Masto (Nevada), and Angus King (Maine), voted Republican from the start and sought to justify themselves by calling a press conference Sunday night, calling the deal they supported “the only possible deal,” and emphasizing that: yes They include reinstating the federal government shutdown until funding ends in the event of a potential new crisis, providing food voucher loans to 42 million dependents in fiscal year 2026, reinstating employees laid off by the Trump administration in the last 41 days, retroactively paying unrecognized losses to those who kept their jobs, and a promise not to contact any more federal employees in the coming months.

Schumer’s criticism

Members of the group, which includes New Hampshire Sens. Jeanne Shaheen and Maggie Hassan, Tim Kaine (Virginia), Dick Durbin (Illinois) and Jacky Rosen (Nevada), voted for a variety of reasons, from concerns about workers, the state’s military and Kaine to prisons in Nevada’s tourism industry. Sean had that reason against him, but now everyone faces similar criticism against himself. In Shaheen’s case, the censorship of the surrender led to Shaheen’s own daughter, Democratic politician Stephanie Shaheen, also expressing her disgust on social networks.

This wave of expansion has also hit Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer, whose supporters are guilty of not maintaining unity within the party. “If we can’t lead the fight to stop Americans from dramatically increasing health insurance premiums, why fight?” California Democratic Rep. Ro Khanna said in a social media post Sunday. Ezra Klein, perhaps the party’s most influential columnist, wrote the following for his position: new york times The title is “En que los demócratas are thinking”.

The deal, which Klein said was reached “in a very short period of time,” also includes a promise to hold a vote in the Senate on extending Obamacare subsidies (the name it received from the president’s Health Parity Act, which promoted it), but it seems clear that it will do little. Neither Republicans nor Trump, who have been attacking this norm for days, appear to have any intention of convincing their rivals on this point. Opponents argue that the vote will at least help force rivals to backtrack on an issue that worries Americans so much.

Meanwhile, Sunday’s Senate proceedings are just the beginning of a process that will see a government formed, hopefully by the end of this week, but things will get more complicated and include the celebratory events of Veterans Day this year. Republican Mayoral Leader Mike Johnson warned lawmakers this morning to return to Washington as soon as possible to vote. It will take Les 36 hours to return to Washington.

The chamber had been closed since before the government shutdown began, ordered by Prime Minister Johnson. Once work resumes, Democrats, with the help of a few Republicans, will force a vote on the Justice Department to release them. Epstein documents, Responding to a lawsuit against millionaire pederast. He died in 2019 in a New York cell awaiting trial, waiting for success. Mr. Epstein is a friend of Mr. Trump, and the president’s name, which has no connection to anyone involved in financial crimes, appeared many times in these newspapers.

Trump joined the Capitol attack earlier this month with a message on his social network Truth, promising a “$10,000” bonus to “patriotic” air traffic controllers who have continued to work in recent weeks despite not receiving pay. In addition, they launched a threat, it is unclear what it means: “To those who have no time more than they would like to spend their free days (…) I am not happy with the rest of you. (…) In this working day, you have a negative point even for me.”

Federal employees, such as those in charge of airport security, have consideration for essential workers. The remaining approximately 750,000 employees will not only be unable to work but also have their employment suspended during the government shutdown. They were all concerned that President Trump would follow through on another threat: not to pay retroactively. After learning the details of the Senate agreement, this concern dissipated.

Between the government’s sierre influence that paralyzed federal agencies for decades and the sierre or neglect of museums, monuments, and natural parks. It sent thousands of workers to food banks and suspended the distribution of vouchers to millions of underprivileged people who depend on them. Perhaps the most severe impact is on air traffic. In addition, the highest authorities may exert pressure on members of Congress.

Last month, the National Aviation Administration (FAA) issued a decision to cancel hundreds of flights at 40 major U.S. airports in the face of low air saturation and the resignation of air traffic controllers. After a chaotic weekend, FlightAware’s website predicts 1,485 flights will be canceled and 825 delayed this month. The situation worsened over time.

We don’t have time to get America’s airports back on track. The process of reopening the government continued slowly on Capitol Hill, but there was no certainty this month when the longest shutdown in U.S. history would end. Also, a great deal of suffering has come from it. It was the most repeated question in Washington the day after two senators surrendered, and if the deal had been reached in the Senate this Sunday, it might have been reached by those who fought before the deal that collapsed before Oct. 1.
