Health authorities reported on Monday: in canada lost its status as a measles-free country Due to the infectious disease epidemic that started a year ago and continues to this day. Over 5,000 people affected.

“Endemic measles transmission has been re-established in Canada. As a result, the Americas lost my certificate as an area free of endemic transmission of measles,” Gervase Barbosa, Director General of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), declared on Monday of this week. In this sense, Mr. Barbosa emphasized that the Regional Monitoring and Review Committee for Measles Eradication: “We use very objective criteria.” Conclude that a country has lost its designation as a measles-free country.

“If the country presents Infection that persisted for more than 12 monthsmeasles infection is thought to have been re-established. (…) If a country loses its certification, the entire region loses its certification. However, it is noteworthy that 34 countries in the Americas maintain their measles-free status,” he explained.

Barbosa said that although “this loss means a setback,” at the same time, “It’s reversible.”. “Until measles is eliminated worldwide, our region will continue to face the risk of virus spread among unvaccinated or incompletely vaccinated populations. But as we have already proven, with political commitment, regional cooperation and continued vaccination, the region can (…) restore this collective achievement,” he declared.

Canadian authorities reminded that: Vaccines are ‘the best way to protect yourself’ “If we remain vigilant and work together to increase measles vaccination rates, we can prevent outbreaks and protect our communities from this preventable disease,” the Department of Public Health said.

From 2024, 5,156 items are registered There are 4,800 confirmed measles cases in 10 regions, and the rest are classified as “suspected.” Furthermore, two deaths have been reported in Japan, both of which were caused by congenital measles in premature babies.
