Article on nepotism and open voting causes crisis in council, postpones vote
Corinthians is experiencing a full-scale political war over reform of the Covenant. Deliberative Council President Romeu Tuma Junior is under intense pressure from his colleagues. In fact, the crisis reached its peak on October 29 with a heated meeting of the Koli (Guidance Council). Extensive discussion began after City Councilor Felipe Isabella classified the project as a “waste,” according to meeting minutes. Mr Thuma then clashed with attendees and “abandoned the meeting”.
At issue are both the content of the text and the format of the vote. Many counselors are uncomfortable with what they consider a “quick” process and want more time for analysis. However, the most explosive point lies elsewhere. First, Mr. Thuma has insisted on an open vote rather than a secret one, which could embarrass members when voting on sensitive issues. Additionally, two provisions have sparked outrage: a proposal to give voting rights to fan members and a ban on relatives of advisers being employed at Corinthians. This is now a common sight in Sao Jorge Park.
The pressure on Tuma is immense. Since the disclosure of the document on October 27, the council president has received daily complaints. Because of this, he was already forced to give in. For example, a board vote scheduled for November 17th was postponed to the 24th to allow more time for analysis. In addition, President Thuma scheduled an informal meeting with all political groups on November 13 with the aim of easing tensions and explaining the project.
Despite surrendering in time, Tuma does not give up on the content and has strategies to overcome internal resistance. The council president has already decided that the most controversial provisions, such as the nepotism veto and member and fan voting, will not be repealed in the deliberative council. Therefore, the proposal will be put to a vote at the general membership meeting scheduled for December 20th. This effectively means that Tuma will overcome pressure from its advisers and leave the final decision to its Corinthian partners.
