A resident of Santos, on the coast of São Paulo, was attacked by a hawk on his way to church and suffered head injuries. Wardiney Amaral, 58, reported the episode on social media.
“Currently, in Santos City you have to wear PPE (personal protective equipment) to buy bread,” he wrote. The publication also included an image of the helmet.
Renewable energy consultants say bird attacks have become “commonplace” at the site. He demands action from city authorities.
“I have escaped several times, but I can no longer look for another route to avoid the attacks of these birds. I have to take immediate action before something worse happens,” he lamented.

Hawk attack on Santos
In response to the report, Santos City Hall said environmental groups were searching for hawks in the locations mentioned by residents to see if the birds’ aggressive behavior toward humans was linked to the presence of nests and chicks.
In such cases, the animal is sent to the Ichiran Center’s Wildlife Treatment and Rehabilitation Center (Setrus). Records must be made by contacting the 24-hour Metropolitan Civil Guard (GCM) 153 and the Environmental Police 190.
“By federal law, the management of wild animal nests is only permitted if there are no chicks or eggs present. Unoccupied nests may only be removed after monitoring and confirming that there are no eggs or chicks in the nest. In this case, removal must be carried out by a free-living animal agency after approval of a management permit application to the state Department of Environment and Infrastructure,” it informed city hall.

- In connection with reports of hawk sightings in parts of Santos, city hall has advised residents not to approach the hawks.
- City officials are advising residents not to leave uneaten food near hotspots. “They attract prey such as rats and pigeons, thereby increasing the food supply for the hawks,” he warned.
- If a seizure occurs, it is recommended that your pet be treated at a health clinic for prevention, wound care, and vaccinations such as tetanus and rabies.
