Belém – Images of protesters show the exact moment indigenous peoples burst through the doors of the Blue Zones of the 30th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30). They were part of a demonstration held on Tuesday night (November 11) that was contained by UN security personnel.

The image shows the moment the first door falls. The crowd then follows and breaks down other doors, taking over the certified area and metal detector. Members of the United Nations Department for Security (UNDSS) rush in and stop the advance. At least one security guard was found injured and bleeding and was helped into a wheelchair by colleagues.

The demonstrators managed to get within 20 meters of the Blue Zone pavilion. This is usually a restricted area patrolled by authorities. Ministers of State, diplomats and negotiators pass through. stand their country. The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCC) did not immediately respond to inquiries.

Indigenous peoples took part in a demonstration organized by the Global Health and Climate March, which was attended by around 3,000 people. They left the main street. A 1.5km route from Duque de Caxias in the center of Belém to COP 30 headquarters. The group said it had complied with “agreements previously signed with the COP30 organizations.”

“The groups that went to Zona Azul after the end of the march participated independently and are not part of the organization or the official provisions of this law,” the group said in a statement. They said their aim was to “call attention to the public health impacts of climate change and the urgent need for policies that protect both people and the planet.”

The injured members of the security team were treated by colleagues and wheeled through the corridors of the Blue Zone in wheelchairs. Close observers of the unrest reported that after removing the protesters, police barricaded the entrance using wooden tables.

The team isolated the main entrance to the Blue Zone with two human cordons and removed all people who were there. Security in the COP Blue Zone area is provided by personnel employed by the United Nations, which has requested reinforcements from state personnel and civilian firefighters.
