Following the success of the famous Broadway production of Wicked, which was also made into a theatrical release, Universal Pictures decided to begin a new film adaptation. This time, the story of Alice in Wonderland will be brought to the big screen in a new live-action and musical version.
And just like with Ariana Grande’s Wicked, the studio is once again handing one of the lead roles to a pop diva. According to Deadline, singer Sabrina Carpenter, who is behind the hit song “Espresso” and was the opening act for Taylor Swift’s “The Eras Tour” in Latin America, will not only produce the film, but will also be responsible for bringing the main character to life.

According to a report from the same portal, the film will be directed and written by Lorene Scafaria, who has already worked on films such as Succession and As Golpistas. The film will be a live-action musical adaptation of Lewis Carroll’s classic story, which was made famous in theaters in 2010 by director Tim Burton.
Production details and schedule have not yet been announced. A musical version of Alice was already planned for 2021 by Netflix. However, the project never went ahead. At the time, Sabrina Carpenter celebrated the production and said she would like to add Harry Styles to the cast.
This will be Sabrina Carpenter’s return to the big screen for the first time since Netflix’s teen romantic comedy Crash to the Heights 2 (2022). As an actress, the singer has also worked on Disney Channel’s Girl Meets the World series and other streaming-focused productions such as Clouds (2020) and Emergency (2022).
But fans of the pop diva were already rooting for the artist to star in the live-action version of the fairy tale. In the middle of this year, when rumors surfaced about a new version of the film Rapunzel (2010), the singer was one of the main candidates chosen by Internet users for the lead role. Also this year, Mamma Mia (2008) star Amanda Seyfried said in an interview that she would like to have Sabrina in the cast of Mamma Mia 3, which is said to be in production.
